What it does

Mural Engine is a dedicated helper that enables dynamic lock screen sync on your Mac. Engine processes your wallpaper at full quality — with all Lab effects included — and updates your dynamic lock screen to match your desktop. Custom media and weather effects stay in motion there, not just on the desktop.

Mural opens it automatically whenever your lock screen needs updating, and it quits on its own when done.

Installation (For Mural 3.1.0 and later — using an earlier version? Update Mural from the Mac App Store first.)

  1. Download and open the disk image. Drag Mural Engine.app into your Applications folder.
  2. Open Mural Engine once. The first time it opens, macOS asks you to confirm — Mural Engine is checked by Apple, so click Open.
  3. In Mural, open the Dynamic Lock Screen tab and turn on Sync Dynamic Wallpaper to Lock Screen.
  4. On macOS 14 and 15, click Authorize when asked and enter your administrator password. This is needed only once.

Updating (For Mural 3.1.0 and later — using an earlier version? Update Mural from the Mac App Store first.)

  1. If Mural Engine is running, quit it from its menu bar icon.
  2. Download the latest version above and open the disk image.
  3. Drag Mural Engine.app into your Applications folder. When macOS asks, choose Replace — not Keep Both. Keep only one copy of Mural Engine on your Mac.
  4. Open Mural Engine once. The first time it opens, macOS asks you to confirm — Mural Engine is checked by Apple, so click Open.

Why a separate download?

Dynamic lock screen sync works with system wallpaper files that apps from the Mac App Store can't access. Distributing Engine as a separate download keeps everything transparent: you always know exactly what's running on your Mac, and you're in full control of when it runs.
